Raffael scored in the 86th minute, when Patrick Ebert crossed for the Brazilian to head past the despairing effort of Sven Ulreich. Ebert had reached the ball after Ulreich’s save from Adrian Ramos to pick out the unmarked Raffael at the far post.
Japan striker Shinji Okazaki hit the post with a header for Stuttgart in the first half.
